How Long Does It Take to Create a Website?

How long does it take to create a website? It’s easy to say that it simply depends. Truth is, it does depend on a lot of factors. But it’s good to know what some of those factors are and to know which ones you have control over. Knowing how long it takes to create a website helps you plan and have more control over your marketing and its budget.

The first factor to consider is, who’s building your website? If you’re building it yourself, you could save yourself a lot of time and money. Sites like Wix, Weebly, and Squarespace allow you to use a template, place your own pictures & content and wah-lah! You’re done. But don’t let the simplicity fool you. Learning how to use the platform and creating a site to perfection can still take time … a lot of time. But it’s all within your control as to how long it will take. If you decide to outsource and have a professional create your website, you have access to professional talent, software, plugins AND you can free up a lot of time to focus on the other areas of your business.

What specifically influences how long it takes to create a website when you have your site designed by a professional?

First and foremost is the content – from pictures & videos to headlines & text. If that information is coming from your previous website or is already curated & prepared by you, then the time that it takes to create your website will be considerably faster. If you don’t have the content ready, then you can speed the time up by having the pictures & text created for you. The downside of course is this will cost more money. If you need to find & take pictures along with writing the content, then this is usually the biggest bottleneck and time consuming part of the entire website design process. Being too caught up in the day-to-day aspects of your business to spend the time needed to organize and prepare the content will naturally slow down the creation of the new website.

Other factors that can impact the time that it takes to create a website include:

  • The number of pages that your site will have. More pages = more time.
  • Will the site be built with a template or will it be custom built? Custom built = more time.
  • Does the new site require special plugins and features? Special plugins & features = more time.
  • The number of revisions or changes that need to be made. More revisions = more time.

Every designer and every agency probably has a different process and steps to create a website and therefore take a different amount of time to create. In a nutshell, these are steps that it takes me to create a website under optimal situations:

  1. Initial Meeting: This is where we discover your needs and what you need (and want) in your website. We establish timelines, goals, and establish a to-do list of what needs to be done and by who.
  2. Initial Design: As I begin to create the website based on what I learned in the initial meeting, I create the basis of a page with the design, layout, fonts, colors, etc. so you can see and get a sense of what the site is going to look & feel like. If any adjustments need to be made, then we work together to meet your expectations.
  3. Designing the Rest of the Site: Once approved, then I move forward creating the rest of the site based on the design that’s been implemented on the first page.
  4. Content: As mentioned above, this can be the biggest bottleneck. If I’m hired to create the content, it does take time but it’s up to me to move it along. If you have to create the content and provide it to me, then it will take as long as it takes for you to gather & create the content. My experience is that this usually takes time as you tend to the other aspects of your business.
  5. Final Review: We’ll do a final review of the site and make any changes that in the end make this the best site for your business.

Total Time: It really does depend on a number of factors, but a good estimate under ideal circumstances would be to have an average sized website created in about a month’s time. Your results may vary depending on the above listed variables.
